Never had as much as a parking ticket in my my life! 50 years driving motor-bikes (Still have one) to log waggons (Before your time) plus military vehicles. Full documentary proff has been sent to Vernon Coaker Under Minister for Justice (Jack's Department) through Nigel Evans M.P.asking for an explanation as to how this can happen.
It;s definitely worth a try! Better than £60 plus 3 points!
After all the system is all about road safety, not money!

This is just the tip of the iceberg! One Year Only! This fiddle and many others has been going on since 2001!
There's also another investigation been going on for over three months into financial irregularities between the Road Safety Partnership, Lancashire Constabulary, & Lancashire County Council that makes this lot look like peanuts! Hundreds of thousands of pounds claimed incorrectly under the "Netting off" process and funding of covert police operations from the fixed penalty payments! Oh just try checking the calibration certificates on the Partnership website a lot of them are out of date by two years!!!!
Falsified police computer records,incorrect figures regarding court appearances ( police figures for 2005/6 claim 24000, court records say 2300!!!

The fact that maladministration has caused 500 odd people to be criminalised seems not to matter to the supporters of the ineffectual speed camera system. All will have had their insurance costs increased, maybe lost their licence/jobs etc etc

It also points out at what speed you'll get a caution, fixed penalty or summons. I am all for speed traps in the areas that are dangerous and in which speed needs to be cut.

However, the only way in which they succeed in cutting speed is if people know they are there.

The signs on roads which have speed cameras on them warn drivers that if they speed, they will be caught and most of the times, they adjust their speed accordingly. Job done, safer stretch of road for everyone using it.

The objective is to cut speed in a particular area that has been statistically proven to be dangerous.

However, what I do not agree with are the sneaky use of mobile speed traps.

If people do not know the speed trap is there, they may be less careful and exceed the speed limit.

Surely, if safety is the stated reason for speed traps, then slowing the traffic down where speed is a real danger is the primary objective, not catching them when they are speeding?

That's like saying it's okay to carry a knife, we'll catch you once you've used it!!!

Surely the more effective way to use a mobile speed trap would be to advertise it well before to give motorists time to check their speed, therefore ensuring that as they pass the dangerous stretch of road, they are not putting lives at risk?

The underhand way in which mobile speed traps are used create a massive amount of resent amongst the general population, many of whom have never had a brush with the law but due to the draconian use of speed traps and traffic law (1mph over the limit?), find themselves offenders.

As I see it, mobile speed traps with no warnings (except the sign in the back of the van as you've already been photographed) is purely a revenue raising ploy.

Am I correct in assuming that the operators of such speed traps have a target to attain for the day?

If so and they haven't 'caught' as many as they need to for the day, how simple would it be to adjust the tolerance of the trap to catch people a fraction over the speed limit?

Use cameras where it is dangerous to slow traffic down to prevent accidents and get these muppets off our streets.

Our tax money needs spending where it is needed - tackling the crime that blights all of our lives, a camera is far cheaper in the long run than gangs of trigger happy speed gun lackeys!

Yes, it's about time - this has been going on for years. Quite a few years ago, I challenged a speeding ticket as I knew there was no possible way I had been exceeding the limit. The Police couldn't provide evidence that the camera had been calibrated at the time, but other paperwork indicated that it was regularly being calibrated to km/hr, which would show 30mph as over the calibrated limit.
Result, I got a larger fine and points, the Police - no action. I'm all for law enforcement, as long as it's by the book and legit.

Capt Dobey - you're living in the past. No-one pulls speeding tickets for friends/family anymore. You just can't do it - serialised ticket numbers, automatic generation of tickets. Its all done by computer.

As the cameras are run by civilian staff, I'm hoping the headline 'Police Officers' is a mistake and 'police staff' i.e. civilians, mentioned in the text, are the people up before the beak.
