ARMED robbers attacked a high street bank, but left empty handed.
Two masked men using a metal drain cover smashed through the window of Lloyds TSB, Bank Street, Rawtenstall, just before 5pm today.
Nobody was hurt and police officers said nothing was taken before the men fled in a Vauxhall car.
Firefighters said they believed a Vauxhall Astra set alight shortly afterwards in Union Street was connected to the incident.
The blaze had gone out by the time they arrived at the scene.
Police said a Vauxhall had been recovered and scenes of crime officers were now examining it.
Detective Inspector Sion Hall of Burnley CID said: "I would ask for anybody who was in the area who may have seen something to come forward.
"Luckily nobody has been hurt but the people who have carried out this crime need to be brought to justice.
"I would appeal to the public to come forward with any information that may be useful to the enquiry."
Witnesses are asked to call Burnley Police Station on 01282 425001 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
