A TWO-year-old girl almost lost a finger after getting trapped in a self-closing fire door at her home.

Heather Hill, 23, from Gifford Way, Darwen, watched in horror as two-year-old Ellie trapped the third finger on her right hand in the hinge at their three-storey town house.

The mother-of-three is now starting a petition calling for the special doors in homes on her newly built estate to be removed.

The incident happened on Saturday as Heather headed out of the house to Blackburn and Ellie followed her through the living room.

Heather said: "Ellie followed me through the living room door and had her fingers by the hinge when the door closed.

"She was screaming in agony and when me and her dad Mark got the door open, her finger tip was hanging on by a thread and there was blood all about.

"She had turned blue with shock, so I called for an ambulance immediately."

An X Ray at the Royal Blackburn Hospital revealed that Ellie hand broken a bone in her finger.

Heather added: "They said they couldn't tell me if they could save the finger. I just cried and cried.

"On Sunday night I got a phonecall from a doctor to say that Ellie couldn't wait for the fracture clinic and she needed to be operated on as soon as possible at the Royal Preston Hospital.

"The operation she had was successful but the finger will be deformed.

"To me it doesn't look like a finger and the specialist said that the nail will fall off and it the finger will be bent.

"She will have the whole hand in bandages for eight weeks and it's stopping her playing and eating properly."

Miss Hill is now setting up a petition to take all of the self-closing fire doors out of the houses on Gifford Way, built by Miller Homes.

She said: "There are a lot of parents with young children, and I would hate this to happen to somebody else.

"People need to know how bad these doors are and how much damage they can cause."

Miss Hill's landlord, Derek Mitchell, said: "It is my understanding that in three-storey townhouses, all internal doors need to be fitted with a self-closing mechanism.

"Miss Hill wanted me to take them off, but legally I cannot do that."

Coun Roy Davies who represents the Sudell ward said: "This raises concerns for other families who have small children."

A spokesman for the The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) confirmed that fire doors were a legal requirement in three-storey town houses and added: "This kind of accident has been a problem over the years, and is relatively common where special fire-proof doors have to be fitted by law.

"Children are inquisitive but there are devices available to buy to prevent the accident occuring."

I would just like to point out a few things regarding the above accident. First of all the offical building regulation approved document appendix BI states that a fire doors with self closing devices need not be used unless used for access to an attached garage. secoundly i have seen one of the houses opposite Heathers house which is also over three storeys which is owned by northern counties, they do have fire doors but don't have the self closing mechanism.

It is a shame what has happened to Ellie and knowing her mother i also know that she is a responsible caring mother who wouldn't do anything to intentually harm her children. If feel ashamed that people would think such a thing especailly since they have never crossed her path and don't know what Heather is like. I would also like to add that i would be willing to sign the petition.

first of all i would like to thank all the people who have left comments wishing for ellie to get well soon! ellie is still under going treatment but hopefully will make a full recovery! i would just like to coment on a few things that have been said on here firstly we are a working family who both work full time, i understand that these doors are fitted for fire regulations i also believe that the doors have been set to fast and at a certain point should slow down before closing and yes there are dvices you can buy but if this is the case when you are in a rented accomadation surely the people who fitted these doors should put soething on to prevent this happening this accident should never of happend to ellie and i would hate to hear of the same thing happening to any other person! i am going to try and get the petition going asap but at the moment my concerns are for ellie.

The device is called a finger saver, I think you can order one from the Ironmongers on Wood St, Darwen. Or maybe just loosen the tension?
I personaly would just remove the 'perko' door closer and refit it at the end of the tenancy, people that own new homes usually remove them as they are the owners and the fire safety goes out the window, because its classed as a private dwelling, otherwise landlords have to keep the fire regs up to scratch.

like she is going to spend her benefit money on one of these!!! surely they have seen the door slam to in the past so why the hell haven't they done something about it before now! prevention is the best cure!! probably too uneducated to realise that

This is my nieces house, the doors slam shut, I have been in buildings where the door closures slowly closes the door, we have been told since that this is not the first accident to happen on this particlar type of door closure and maybe the manufacturer should be looking at ways to improve their products.

No one seems to take a balanced view of risk these days. Yes lets remove all the fire doors to prevent a risk of injury to a finger. Who cares if that causes a serious risk of death in the event of a fire!

Those special strips to ,ake the doors safe are not expensive-made of plastic, and should be available at any good D.I.Y store/ We use them in our Community Centres, to protect the toddlers and young children. It might be a good idea for the Housing Associations to instal them as standard, thus protecting all who rent from them , not just children.

Poor little girl. Hope she's better soon and the petition works. I beleive that self-closing fire doors are a good idea, but they need to manufactured in a way that they cannot do any harm to little ones.
Get well soon.
