A MULTI-MILLION pound transformation of Blackburn with Darwen's primary schools is set to begin next year.

The council will receive £8.7million of government money to rebuild or upgrade school buildings.

The cash - £3.1million for 2009/10 and £5.6million for 2010/11 - will be targeted at schools and areas with the highest need, although exact details of which schools will benefit have not yet been decided.

A decision will be based on predicted future pupil numbers, the condition and suitability of existing school buildings, educational standards and levels of deprivation. Many schools are likely to receive improvements to dining, kitchen, sports and ICT facilities.

A strategy for change document outlining the vision for primary school education in Blackburn with Darwen will be submitted to the government for consideration in June.

Coun Chris Thayne, executive member for children's services, said: "Those crucial years in primary school set the foundation stones for children's education and that's why this investment is so important."

Residents are invited to email comments about the council's vision for primary schools to ell.comments@blackburn.gov.uk.

All good, so long as British children get first places in future, not these foreigners.

The comment posted by 'A Parent' is incorrect as the majority of children who attend St Silas'School are of Asian origin with no pupils as far as I know attending Church. I think she/he is referring to Sacred Heart RC School which is further down the street so 'Observer' is quite right to wonder why St Silas' School is still in a building which would be out of place in many 2nd world countries.

Observer, St Silas' is about half Asian kids (Muslim in most cases, I guess) and about half white kids (Catholic in most cases, I guess).

Are we not reaching the point when local schools don't need additional spending on them as they have been very generously funded under this Govt. and quite rightly so? Many have high resrves in their budgets and I suspect most don't need new facilities and many will receive new facilities when the existing ones are still fit for purpose thus to replace would be a waste of funds. As far as I am aware Blackburn has only one Victorian primary school which is in dire need of replacement i.e. St Silas' but the related church, which is well off won't put in the necessaryy funding, so I am led to believe, perhaps not surprising given that the school is almost 100% Muslim. In that case why is the school still an aided school?

Is it true thatthe 'most deprived wards' also have the highest levels of car ownership or it is just a misperception on the part of the public?

Rather than spend £8.7 mill on improving schools why not bring in 8.7 mill canes that's what is needed.
