ROVERS' outside chance of a place in the Intertoto Cup was foiled on the final day of the season.
But Birmingham City's efforts to avoid relegation were in vain as, despite twice taking the lead before Fabrice Muamba sealed the win with the fourth and final goal late on, results elsewhere meant they dropped back down to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.
Birmingham took the lead just after the half-hour, when David Murphy ran onto a quickly taken free kick and, after not being closed down, took the opportunity of a speculative shot at goal.
Brad Friedel looked to have it well covered, but took his eyes off the low strike for a second and the ball spooned up out of his hands and over the line.
Morten Gamst Pedersen got Rovers back on level terms four minutes into the second half with a first-time right foot shot from Roque Santa Cruz's square ball, after Jason Roberts' initial effort had been charged down.
Brett Emerton, Santa Cruz and Roberts all had chances to put Rovers in front, but they capitulated after Birmingham had regained the lead in the 74th minute.
Moments after Cameron Jerome had missed a sitter from close range, the Birmingham substitute slotted home after latching onto Sebastian Larsson's ball from the right.
Jerome made it 3-1 with a minute to go from Gary McSheffrey's ball into the box.
Muamba wrapped it up in stoppage time with a free header.

That may sound strange considering our 2 front guys are doing so well but Benni is 2 diminsional slow and, well lazy. As for Matt he's lightweight and lacks creativity. If you compared JR to Derbs and asked which one you'd choose its a no brainer. JR is powerfull, direct, a nuscance and a real go-getter. Matty is a mediocre fox in the box. There may be a place for him on the wing if MGP continues playing like he has been but id be suprised as other than pace he lacks every ttribute you look for in a winger - ie, creativity, passing and crossing abilty, quick feet, tenacity, and the ability to beat a full back. Believe me if i've seen it MH will have. I believe we'll be bringing in 2 new Strikers,a Centre mid, right winger and Right back. Making way will be Bents,Zurab, Benni, Axe, Matty and Emmo. 5 of these 6 will be sold i'd imagine with one poss Brett just simply dropping to the bench to accomodate. So u r a local lad (hence a fan) and to be playing junior football at the time of duff and flitcroft, means u must be under 25, meaning ur not dunny. The only player that fits that criteria in the 1st team squad is Debyshire, but u have stated ur not him already, and u say u played against great harwood. That means you r a fringe player, but u did say u have played in a number of positions for the team this season, and youngsters like Treacy, Nolan, Kane, even gallacher etc have only made 1 or 2 apperances. the only player that leaves (and im sat with the squad list in front of me) is martin olsson? As for your 'Fulham won as much as you' comment I do have to correct you on that. BRFC through it's league position alone should inform you that BRFC have won more than Fulham. Quite possibly £3/4 million. So on that note you have to stand corrected. The only comment that holds any water is BRFC failed in it's attempt for Euro. Much better to attempt a Euro place than not at all.I'm sure most BRFC fans would agree with that. Now,as I said in yesterdays post what the fu*k do I care what you have to say? A response from me is purely courteous. As I say you must speak in broader terms otherwise what is the point?
