Pub calls time on Easter booze-up
REVELLERS in Ramsbottom will not be allowed inside their traditional Good Friday watering hole.
The hundreds of people who descend on the town for Good Friday will be made to drink outside at the Hare and Hounds after last year's booze-up left landlord Andy Grant with a £6,000 cleaning bill.
This year, Andy will serve beer from an outside bar but says he will not open the pub itself - even if it rains.
There will also be more police than ever at the festivities, with 20 officers on duty.
The Hare and Hounds, in Bolton Road West, Holcombe Brook, is traditionally the pub of choice for Good Friday revellers in Ramsbottom.
Landlord Andy said he was under pressure from the brewery Orchid to make big takings, but that personally he wanted to see the annual all-day binge shut down.
He said: "I just had the pub refurbished at the end of last year so I'm not having people coming in here and using it as a toilet again.
"They can drink outside. I don't care if it rains, no one's coming in.
"Ninety-nine per cent of these people come from outside Ramsbottom and they don't care about the pub because it's not their local.
"They descend on Ramsbottom in their nice new clothes and get as drunk as they possibly can. I've had enough of it. It should be banned."
Good Friday means big takings but also a big outlay at the real ale pub.
Andy said he had spent £1,250 to hire 18 portable toilets, £1,000 on policing, and £360 to hire two skips for all the rubbish.
Police intend to have a high profile in Ramsbottom tomorrow.
Inspector Bryn Williams said: "Last year went quite well with virtually no incidents, although there were plenty of drunk people.
"This year I've secured 20 officers - the most we've had in Ramsbottom on a Good Friday - to ensure that everyone who attends has a good time and remains safe, and that those who do step out of line are dealt with swiftly."
The Good Friday booze-up remains unpopular with many Ramsbottom residents.
One reader wrote on the Bury Times online forum: "What's the betting the streets of Ramsbottom and Holcombe Brook are full of boozed up teenagers causing problems again on Good Friday?
"Why didn't Alistair Darling bang up the duty on alcohol bought from supermarkets and off-licences and cut it on beer, wine and spirits bought in pubs and bars?
"Once again responsible drinkers pay the price for these fuelled up idiots."

Why don't they just shut the pub all together instead of 'wasting' £2560? By shutting the pub, the patrons will just use the surrounding area as a 'toilet'. "They descend on Ramsbottom in their nice new clothes and get as drunk as they possibly can. I've had enough of it. It should be banned." Yeah right, talk about pre-emptive damage limitation!

Years of tradition down the drain. Looking forward immensely to standing in the peeing down rain in a car park freezing my nips off drinking a bottle of warm lager kindly served by the scrooge landlord.

I hate to see all the drinkers outside "the dogs" but also cringe at the mess they leave. The landlord charges for entry at all other events so why not charge this time and donate the money to charity. And shutting the pub will just mean that yobs will use the streets and everywhere else. I wouldn't like to live in the houses directly adjacent to the pub. And I really think the Police have better things to do than police a bunch of drunken idiots and, yes, they are mostly from outside the area but that doesn't mean the residents of Ramsbottom are without blame - they are just as bad - look around Holcombe Brook and Ramsbottom any weekend, it is disgraceful. If the landlord genuinely doesn't want the problem, he should completely shut for the day and not even serve outside - do us all a favour and cancel it NOW!

As usual, the landlord is putting profit first. Shut the pub completely and enjoy a day off yourself landlord!

The brewery should kick this muppet landlord out. I dont care what he says even if the place gets torn apart he will still make more takings in one day than he does in an entire month so what is his problem? I now hope no punters pitch up and he is left with an empty car park and a stack off cheap booze with no takers.

I think if you read between the lines here, the "landlord" would actually like to shut up on Good Friday to safeguard his pub. However, this is a "tenanted" pub and he is "under pressure from the brewery" to pull in big profits!
The pub is pretty big inside and has traditionally been a respite for the biking fraternity, who think that a good pub should have a little sawdust and beer spillages on the floor.
The pub has been refurbished and if kept in tippy top condition should attract a more upmarket clientele, as there are few pubs around Ramsbottom and Holcombe Brook which have any quality.
I hope the Police (unfortunately it's Greater Manchester Police in these parts and they are not quite as switched on as Lancashire Constabulary) pay attention to drink drivers, as there is a reasonably sized car park here.
These louts last year left cans and all sorts of mess. A lot come over from Oldham, Rochdale, North Manchester to do the Rammy Mile and unfortunately they cannot hold their drink.

I've got to admit that it'll be sad not to have The Hare and Hounds as a real option on Good Friday. It's a tradition that's been going for as long as I can remember and in years gone by they've been a massive success. The Hare and Hounds has always been the place to be on good friday. I can understand where the landlord is coming from though, he's just spent an arm and leg having the pub refurbed and I wouldn't want a load of drunken idiots messing that up if I was in charge. Anyway, hopefully everyone can still have a fantastic good friday...I know that I will!

I can not believe it, Rammy is to have 20 police officers in town on good friday. Have they been given sat nav because we don't have any for the other 355 days of the year. Is it because this is a leap year we are allowed some police. Amazing, you phone 999 as two girls are about to be raped by 20 lads and nothing happens, you open your pub to a bunch of drunks and 20 police arrive. Worng and Priorities are words that spring to mind.

To Les from Bury. Clearly you know nothing about the demographic of Ramsbottom. A large proportion of the residents of Ramsbottom are actually people who have moved here since the 80s when new housing estates started to be built. You should take a trip to Bacup to see what interbred really means.

I assume "The Major" appendage to your monicker refers to the pub on Bolton Road?
A landlord with a vested interest are you? Worried about Easter P*ssups being stopped and your takings plummeting?
Give me a break!

Lots of stories doing the rounds from landlords, too much trouble, not worth it,not opening shutting early,All rubbish,EXTRA BEER HAS BEEN BOUGHT IN.The pubs in rammy have very few in during the week so its a chance too make money. No one forces the landlord to open.Just a pity that the place where your pint is cheapest and its agood,un is not open till6-30.

I am born & bred in Rammy and unfortunately live on Bolton Rd West, we have come to dread Good Friday as all we get is drunken knobheads throwing themselves into our gardens, throwing up on the paths, smashing glasses & bottles all over the show, not to mention damage to our cars.
Walking into Rammy Saturday morning will be a hop, skip & a jump over smashed glass, pools of sick & take away food.
Good old Rammy - NOT!!

Far too many daily mail anti alcohol readers in here.
Unlike the road on most friday nights and indeed school holiday nights, i find the rammy mile at easter to be populated by older more mature folk who like to drink in pubs, rather than on the streets in trackies and trainers, just there to have a good time.
god knows where all these yobs are coming from, but i'd hazard a guess that the ones calling us good friday drinkers yobs are the miserable ones who like to read hello magazine, watch dancing on ice, complain and not get out very much.
i'm pretty sure good friday does the economy of ramsbottom lots of good, the pubs will take loads of money compared to what they usually do.
and if there is loads of glass and sick on the streets, your going to get your money worth out of your council tax when it gets cleaned. stop moaning you miserable gits.

god knows where all these yobs are coming from, but i'd hazard a guess that the ones calling us good friday drinkers yobs are the miserable ones who like to read hello magazine, watch dancing on ice, complain and not get out very much.
i'm pretty sure good friday does the economy of ramsbottom lots of good, the pubs will take loads of money compared to what they usually do.
and if there is loads of glass and sick on the streets, your going to get your money worth out of your council tax when it gets cleaned. stop moaning you miserable gits.

Not sure the wider economy of Rammy benefits. A few pub managers might make a bit of extra commission on food and the takeaways will do a bit more I suppose. To suggest that everything has been sweetness and light in Rammy on Good Fridays in recent years is nonsense. Anyway hope you get home in one piece and when you do throw up try and do it down a grid owd lad.

I thought Easter was about Jesus....originally people of ramsbottom used to climb holcombe hill to signify jesus climbing the hill with the cross. The boozy bit came in when cans became readily available..and it's escalated from there. The comments on this forum just go to show the mentality of some folk....they havent got a notion about what Easter is all about! As usual it all boils down to booze and ignorance. Lets hope the weather tomorrow is just like it is today!

here, here!! I remember in the 60's when I would climb holcombe hill with my siblings and buy a fairy on a stick at the bottom, other things were available like monkeys on sticks and potato guns also stink bombs. we would then go home for a nice easter meal with relatives. (usually salad)unfortunately the alcohol side of things spoilt it for the traders at the bottom of the hill and they dont pitch their vans now. suppose thats modern day living!! I bet little kids would love it now.

THE LANDLORD OF THE HARE AND HOUNDS IS SO GREEDY THAT IF HE REALLY WANTED TO CLOSE ON GOOD FRIDAY THEN WHATS STOPPING HIM , I THINK THE REAL REASON IS THAT HE WONT BE ABLE TO GO ON HIS NORMAL 7 HOLIDAYS ABROAD A YEAR IF HE LOST THE TAKINGS ON GOOD FRIDAY . GREED ALWAYS WINS NO MATTER WHAT HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THE PEOPLE HE IS SELLING IS OVERPRICED BEER TO ,HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF .

I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO ENJOY YOURSELF NOW AND THEN OR IS IT JUST WORK AND PAY BILLS AND TAXES AND KEEP QUIET , THE AMOUNT OF COUNCIL TAX I AHVE TO PAY EACH MONTH FOR LITTLE SERVICE BACK IS A DISGRACE AND GOOD FRIDAY SHOULD GIVE BURY COUNCIL SOMETHING TO DO BY CLEANING UP THE MESS AS THAY NEVER DO MUCH DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR .

Religion is for the weak minded, there is not one good reason to beleive in religion and many good reasons for not believing in religion.

What a great day, really enjoyed coming up to Holcombe. Good food, good beer, nice people. A highlight and certainly one of the nicest parts of north Manchester. Can't wait to do it all again next year.

£4 per bottle of beer in the Hare and Hounds (well outside actually)absolute daylight robbery. Serves him right there was hardly anyone there. So much fuss made before the event I think most people avoided it. Only 6 holidays this year then cos he will have to pay the bill for the portaloos etc.

Are you the Geoff in the Hare who got his willy caught on the fruit machine last Friday night. If so you are a good sport you had the pub in uproar for over an hour. i haven't laughed so much for years.

It is, however, North of Manchester.
There is a huge difference.

To avoid any more confusion the Hare and Hounds location is in Holcombe Brook, which is itself in the District of Ramsbottom. So to Chappers and Geoff,Sarah was correct-the Hare and Hounds is offically in Ramsbottom. It also has a Ramsbottom telephone code 01706-82 and an offical Post Office Ramsbottom address.
