Women across the country are snapping up luxury corsets in a bid to add a touch of spice to everyday life in the run-up to Christmas, a leading retailer said.

Selfridges said sales of its luxury fashion corsets were up 70% as stocks of Bordelle's £900 feather girdle sold out in 24 hours at its Oxford Street store in central London.

Luxury lingerie sales were up across the country, with the average spend increasing by 16% compared with this time last year at Selfridges' stores in Birmingham, London and Manchester.

Helen Attwood, Selfridges' head buyer for lingerie, said: "The trend for underwear worn as outerwear is more popular than ever with customers investing more in fashion that adds a touch of spice to everyday life."

Sales of Bordelle's Angela Cage bandage dress, at £365, also soared by 90% after 21-year-old Umbrella star Rihanna stepped out in a similar white leather bandage catsuit at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles earlier this week, a spokeswoman for the retailer said.
