BACK over the years, May used to be an important month in the life of communities.

The church would crown its May queen and a maypole would be the centre of the festivals and celebrations of the event.

Here, we have two photographs, dating back to 1928/30 of just such a big day in the life of St Francis Church, Blackburn.

They have been sent to Looking Back by Mrs Yarnold of Tockholes, although we don't know who the queen is or the names of her large retinue.

The only name we do have is Madge Mackrell, third from the right at the back of the maypole picture and second from left on the back row of the group shot.

Her grandfather cut the first sod and laid the foundation stone for St Francis' Sunday school and was known as Old Mack. Her father was manager of Cherry Tree Machine Company and she had two brothers, George and Jim.

I refer to the above photograph taken from the article ‘Looking Back’. My sister, from Blackburn, and I recognised our cousin OLGA ENTWISTLE. In the group photograph she was positioned fourth from the left on the back row, and in the maypole photograph she was positioned second from the right.
Olga was my uncle’s daughter on my mother’s side, and lived in the village of Cherry Tree, where she attended St. Francis. Her brother, George, is still alive and now aged over 90 years lives in Lammack, Blackburn. My mother and her sisters attended St. Francis Church and my mother was married there in 1917.
It was interesting to see the photographs and they bring back quite a few memories of visiting my grandfather and Olga’s parents in Cherry Tree.
