Plea for memories of Gandhi’s visit to Darwen

2:50pm Tuesday 3rd March 2009

AN appeal has been made for the local community to come forward with any artefacts they may have for a local history exhibition.

The exhibition produced by UCLAN history students will be displayed at either Blackburn Museum or Darwen Library. It will centre on Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Lancashire in 1931, particarly his visit to the Greenfield Mill site at Darwen.

The Indian political and spiritual figure spoke to workers affected by his country’s boycott of Lancashire cotton.

Anyone who has any artefacts relating to either Greenfield Mill, or Gandhi's actual visit that day should contact bradcliffe@uclan.ac.uk or jimmyoneil@ hotmail.co.uk.
