Safebreak at Haslingden Co-op

SAFEBREAKERS snatched £1,000 from a Haslingden strongroom back in 1960 after burning through 6in thick doors of five safes with a blow torch.

The raid, at the Co-op Society’s offices, was described as ‘Chicago-like’ by police.

The burglars got into the building through a skylight, broke down the strongroom door and then blasted their way through the safes.

Mr J H Fitton, manager of the office, which stood next to Woolworths in Bank Street, said at the time: “When the books are checked, I expect £1,000 to be missing.”
