Chorley mark 25 years since Wolverhampton Wanderers triumph

CHORLEY are holding a special reunion on Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of their famous FA Cup victory over Wolves.

The most remarkable night in the Magpies’ history came on November 24, 1986, when they claimed an incredible 3-0 win over Wolves at Bolton’s former Burnden Park ground.

Charlie Cooper scored twice, with Mark Edwards also on target, after the first round tie had gone to two replays.

The victory made back page headlines in every national newspaper.

At the time Chorley, playing in the Northern League, were managed by current chairman Ken Wright.

Cooper, Paul Moss and Ian Senior and the rest of the heroes from that team will be reunited on Friday at the social club at Chorley’s Victory Park ground, as the Magpies and fans celebrate that famous night.

To mark the achievement, the club’s main sponsors The Chorley Group presented Ken Wright with a special ‘Chorley Cake’ earlier this week.

Wright said: “It was an incredible night and for most of us it was probably the highlight of our careers.”

The reunion will feature video footage from the tie with tickets, including a hot pot supper and free pint, available for £10 from John Derbyshire on 07966 308578.

Ah yes, I remember it well. That was four years after Wolves were taken over by the Bhatti Brothers, and they got relegated from the First Division, to the Fourth Division in consecutive seasons.

It just shows what can happen to a famous old football club, if it has the misfortune to fall into the hands of a couple of half-witted brothers, who know f*** all about football.

I fear history could repeat itself at another famous old football club, not a million miles away from Chorley.
