Holy Trinity Church in Barnoldswick is planning a procession through the town to mark its 50th anniversary.
Holy Trinity held the first service at its new building on Skipton Road on March 28 1960, and, to mark the occasion, parishioners held a procession that started at the former St James’s Church in Church Street.
“We’re not exactly recreating the walk, but we’ll be meeting in the Town Square on Palm Sunday and will process to Holy Trinity holding Palm crosses,” said current vicar The Rev John Lancaster.
He said the processional cross would be carried by the same person who carried it 50 years ago – Holy Trinity organist Maurice Town. He will be assisted by former St James’s choirboy Robert Lambert.
Mr Lancaster said he hoped the service, on March 28, would be a community event as there were probably still several people in the town who had either helped build Holy Trinity or taken part in its “buy a brick” scheme to raise funds.
The Right Rev David Hope, Assistant Bishop of Bradford and former Archbishop of York, will lead the service.
Mr Lancaster is hoping the church will be looking its best for the event as it has received funding from Pendle Council and Barnoldswick Town Council for an £11,100 planting scheme. It has been designed to brighten up the front of the church, open up the sightlines, improve pedestrian safety and deter anti-social behaviour. The scheme will include a flowerbed and Pendle Council has set aside an annual budget of £990 to pay for spring and summer plants.
“The scheme they came up with is in excess of what we imagined was possible,” said Mr Lancaster.
“It will be an open space that is a prominent feature of Barlick and the land will be making a statement about the town.”
Pendle’s West Craven Area Committee is also looking at installing new lighting outside the church.
