Primary school hits a century and not out

PADIHAM Primary School has been celebrating its centenary.

The school was built during the Edwardian era, in 1909, but staff and pupils are moving out of the 100-year-old building into a new £5million school across the road.

To mark the milestone, the school hosted a three-day celebration, with a reunion for around 200 former staff and pupils, which saw the building festooned with Edwardian decorations for an indoor street party where pupils wore Edwardian costume.

Mini-concerts for parents were laid on during the second day of events before pupils enjoyed an indoor street party on the final day.

John Hughes, headteacher for 17 years, said: “We had to have the street party inside because of the rain but we asked pupils to dress in an Edwardian style and they all made the effort.

“It was really good fun and it was also something a bit different. It went down so well with both pupils and staff, with everyone enjoying themselves.”

Thousands of pupils have passed through the doors during the past 10 decades and here we have two old school photographs here, showing a class from 1949 and another from 1953.
