LET’S take a step along the catwalk to see what all the best-dressed women of East Lancashire were wearing in 1963.
As warmer weather arrived, all the local shops were selling budget- priced summer cotton dresses, such as this one pictured left, which you could snap up for just £1 9s 11d!
They came in a wide range of designs, taking in both traditional florals, as well as abstract patterns, seen as contemporary for the time.
Made from Lancashire woven cottons, you could choose sheath dresses, or those with full skirts, and opt for sleeveless, short sleeve, or what was then described as bracelet length.
To finish off outfits, many housewives of the time would wear a summer hat, made either from net or coarse weave straw, although fashion designers of the time advised that felt ‘Avenger’-style hats looked striking with a cape or poncho-style jacket.
Pointed toe shoes and sling back heels were all the rage in ’63 and you could expect to pay around £2 9s 11d for a pair.
The more expensive styles, suitable for weddings, had all lace fronts and were available in bronze, black, beige and white, for £3 19s 11d.
Cut-away Italian designs were more expensive again at five or six guineas, but came in bright hues, such as citron yellow with black strapping and mint green.
