IT was usually spring when the cub scouts went out bob-a-jobbing.

You would hear a knock at the door and there would be a little boy proud in his uniform asking to do a household chore for cash.

So families would set them to, maybe running an errand to the corner shop, or putting out the rubbish, or even doing a spot of dusting.

All the money raised would go to cub funds and everyone was happy – apart from the cubs, who had to do all the work!

This photograph from our own archives shows one young cub, sat crossed legged on a street corner, counting out his earnings in 1983.

After a strenuous week, nine-year-old Geoffrey Lloyd Hartley, of Bentley Street, Nelson, gets away from it all to tot up his takings. He’s pictured on the back street of Netherfield Road, Nelson.

Geoffrey was a cub in Salem 11th Nelson pack.
