Helmshore school celebrates 100th birthday

PUPILS took a step back in time as they helped an East Lancashire school celebrate its centenary.

Youngsters at Helmshore Primary School dressed in period costume to mark 100 years since the first pupils were enrolled on June 7 1909.

A nostalgic performance about war-time Britain, a photographic competition for parents and children based on the theme “100”, and a centenary cookery book marked the occasion.

Former pupils were also invited back to the school to share their memories.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The children have been involved in a variety of cross-curricular activities and we have studied the work of LS Lowry and used this to inspire a large hall display using Lowry’s techniques to depict pictures of Helmshore, and especially the school, over the last 100 years.

“We have also made large models of school equipment old and new and developed displays to depict the different areas of the curriculum.

“The school has served the village of Helmshore well over the years and there are many children in school whose parents, grandparents and even great grandparents attended.”

The school still has registers and logbooks dating back to 1909.

Records have shown that Helmshore Primary was always one of the larger schools in the Rossendale Valley.

Next week a centenary music concert will be held at the school which will feature a group of older pupils performing an original version of the show The Sound Of Music.
