Walking days memories wanted

Chorley folk with memories or pictures of Walking Day events are being asked to help with the production of a book about the event.

Lancashire Walks of Witness Group are looking for people who participated in Walking Day with St James’s Parish, Chorley and have photographs of the occasion.

The group are looking to capture those memories in a book they are planning with the help of a £10,000 cash grant from the Lottery’s Awards for All funding. Cathy Hurley, from the group, said: “Children at St James’s school will be trained by Louise McCall, the curator at Astley Hall, to handle the photographs and carefully log them so they may be included in the book and then safely returned. “The children will also be trained in interview technique and the use of digital recording equipment so that reminiscences may be recorded and stored in the North West Sound Archive at Clitheroe Castle.” There have been Walking Days, or Walks of Witness, in Lancashire since the mid 1800s but they are now in decline. The group are particularly looking for people who can recall the tradition as far back as 70 or 80 years ago, as well as more recently. Anyone who thinks they may be able to help with the project or would like more information is asked to call Cathy on 01257 410297.
