FORTY years ago, long summer holidays were often referred to as the street jumble season, as kids set up stalls on street corners.
The sales were followed by a procession to local town halls as youngsters handed over the money raised to the mayors' charities.
Two young lads in Burnley came up with a different idea in 1968, however, to help their local hospital.
Robert Martlett, 11, of Eastern Avenue and 12-year-old Paul Coulton of Leamington Ave, ran a penny fair', with the special attraction of a bran tub.
The previous years they raised £1 10s for the cancer campaign, but had determined to beat this sum in aid of Burnley hospitals.
