‘Chicane’s’ fine, it’s the drivers

I READ with interest and, I have to say, amazement your story about the road safety chicane in the Daneshouse area of Burnley being removed and replaced with a speed hump.

This work isn’t because it is unsafe or aged but, according to the three local councillors, because drivers don’t like it and can’t work out whose right of way it is.

That line almost had me spitting my breakfast cereal across the table.

I know this area particularly well and travel down the road quite a bit on my way to Asda.

And what I will say is that if anyone can’t work out the road system shouldn’t be on the road.

There are signs, which are crystal clear, and also markings on the road - and even at night there is no excuse because the street is well lit.

So instead of the county council pandering to these people who can’t drive, they should stand firm and keep the road layout as it is.

Because to spend a fortune on a speed hump is quite simply a grotesque waste of council tax payers’ money.

The three local county councillors calling for this work should resign immediately because there is no way they are representing their electorate with ideas like this.

We should be following Fins

EMPLOYMENT may be up, but almost four million people have insecure jobs which barely make ends meet.

Government figures which show employment is at the highest rate ever should not be allowed to mask the insecurity facing so many families in Britain today as wage growth slows.

These latest figures should not mask a job market built on sand.

Wage growth has slowed just as the inflation rate hits its highest level in two years.

Almost four million people are still in insecure jobs which barely allow them to make ends meet.

People need quality jobs they can build a life on.

With the Government threatening to push Britain off the Brexit cliff-edge the endemic insecurity across the country risks getting much worse, as people’s livelihoods are sold down the river by a Prime Minister threatening to turn this country into an offshore tax haven.

That’s why the Government should follow the lead of countries like Finland which are investigating the merits of introducing a basic universal income, to stop people falling into poverty, while providing the choice, security and stability they need.

Labour’s a busted flush

AFTER Labour’s collapse in Copeland, it’s clear the Liberal Democrats are the only real alternative to the Tories.

Labour had held the Copeland constituency since its creation in 1983.

After years of neglect, a struggling Labour Party nationally and a campaign of fear and not hope, the electorate gave up on Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour.

With world and national politics as they are, a decent and reliable opposition to Theresa May’s Government is needed.

Only the Lib Dems will fight for a Britain that is tolerant, open-minded, outward-looking and optimistic, where everyone can get up and get on.

Some parents send me mad

I CANNOT believe some parents.

While I was waiting to use the ATM at the Tesco store I saw a young girl pushing the keys of one ATM.

On looking around I saw the mother using the next machine. It was obvious the mother knew that her daughter was playing with it.

When the mother had finished using the machine she turned to her daughter and said, “come on.”

As they walked away the ATM started to bleep.

I would like to know why the young girl was not told that the ATM is not a toy!
