ACCRINGTON actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street , is taking a break from the show.

The actress is taking two months off to star in Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster .

On Tuesday, Julie tweeted: “Right that’s me done. Bye bye Weatherfield til October! #bitoftheatre #sicksinmouth”

The stage show is a moving response to the death of 20-year-old student Sophie from Bacup. She was beaten to death in 2007 in Stubbylee Park, because she was wearing gothic style clothes.

The play is at Manchester’s Royal Exchange running September 19 to 29.

Julie will play Sophie’s mum, Sylvia. Rachel Austin will play the role of Sophie.

A radio version was produced last year and premiered on BBC Radio 4. It won the BBC audio and music best speech programme of the year award.
