A RARE work by one of the 20th Century’s greatest playwrights is being brought to the stage from tonight by Blackburn Arts Club.

Broken Glass was written by Arthur Miller, perhaps best known for The Crucible, in 1994, just nine years before his death.

The work is set in 1938 Brooklyn, New York, where Phillip and Sylvia Gellburg’s lives are thrown into turmoil by a mysterious illness that confines Sylvia to a wheelchair. Leading the cast in these roles are Robin Brown and Zoe Tompkins.

A drama club spokesman said: “Many think she’s been traumatized by news coming out of Germany of the Nazi party’s violent campaign against the Jewish community there but the doctor tasked with restoring her to health pursues other questions that ultimately lead to strains in relationships all round.

“For any Arthur Miller fans this will be a welcome rare outing for a play not seen much since its British Premiere at the National Theatre in 1994.

“This thought-provoking play is full of passion, compassion, long-hidden anguish, raw emotion and a sprinkling of dark humour.”

Geoff Baron has produced the play, which runs at the Gibraltar Street arts club. He also plays the doctor with Lisa-Marie Hunt as his wife. Sara Ashton plays Sylvia’s sister and David Pilkington completes the cast as Phillip’s boss.

The production also features original incidental music created especially for the piece by club member Tom Howarth.
