Canadian folk band looking forward to Ramsbottom Festival

THE crowds at this year’s Ramsbottom Festival had best bring their dancing shoes with them for the show by Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys.
For the Canadian folk/roots outfit are renowned for their live performances, which often feature frontman Gordie leading the dancing from the stage.
“We love to perform. That’s why we all do it,” said Gordie. “We particualrly love festivals where you get a very mixed audience who soon get caught up with our high energy shows.
“We often get people at the end of a set saying ‘we don’t like folk music but you were great’ which is always funny.”
With fiddle, banjo and guitar featuring prominently in their songs, the band’s music shares its origins with Scottish and Irish folk music.
The band are all from Prince Edward Island off Canada’s east coast.
“I think emigrants from Scotland and Ireland settled there and brought their traditional music with them,.” said Gordie.
“We do play some traditional songs but we also mix the set up with a lot of our own material.”
It’s a combination which clearly works well with the band featuring prominently in various Canadian music awards and their latest album Pickin’ n Clickin’ getting rave reviews from the critics.
The band will play the Sunday of Ramsbottom Festival as part of a UK tour.
“This will be our third visit to England and every time we pick up more and more interest,” said Gordie. “We are beginning to see some familiar faces at our shows which is very gratifying.
“This has been a pretty intense year for us touring wise as we’ve done Australia for the first time too.”
With many folk and roots artuists, the music is something which has been in the family for generations.
But Gordie admits that he comes from a non-musical family.
“I first started off going to traditional dance classes when I was about six,” he said. “Then later my brother and I started up a band and it’s been music ever since for me.”
