Peace and love in Rossendale!
YEAH, baby, yeah! Shake out the flares for the swinging Sixties are making a return to groovy Rossendale next month.
For a weekend starting Friday, September 13, the Rossendale Valley will be alive with flower power and love-ins (mainly with scooter and Volkswagen camper van fans) The R60s Festival includes super psychedelic events in Rawtenstall, Bacup and Whitworth.
Organiser Barry Hyde, secretary of Rossendale Revival group, said: “We wanted to organise an event that would spread out over Rossendale.
“We asked for ideas and the 60s came up as a theme. It seemed perfect as the older members of the community could remember the era and the younger ones seem to be getting into it. We are hoping to establish it as an annual event.”
The weekend of events include a 60s exhibition at Rossendale Museum featuring George Harrison’s amplifier, a 60s teenage bedroom set, the iconic scooter and music and memorabilia from The Astoria.
Barbarella’s in Rawtenstall will host live 60s music over the weekend.
Yarn Storm, a community arts group, has produced Flower Power an exhibition of crocheted and knitted flowers which will be displayed in the window of Haslingden Library. Staff will also be dressing up and organising kids’ activities.
Rawtenstall and Bacup centres will host hippy markets selling arts and crafts and featuring live music.
Steam trains from the 60s will be riding into Rawtenstall Station for the weekend.
Sunday will see scores of scooter lovers riding through the valley stopping off in Bacup, Whitworth and Rawtenstall calling at The Museum and the Old Cobbblers Inn, which will also feature American classic cars and a scooter accessory market.
Mark Smith of Rossendale Photography, will be providing a ‘Scooter Shoot’ at the Old Cobblers event — an opportunity for scooter fanatics to have a photo taken with their pride and joy as a memento of the day in return for a donation.
There will also be a competition for best scooter.
A wide range of classic cars will also be on display at JA Taylor in Rawtenstall including a replica Lotus Seven.
