A couple from Adlington are to star on a nationally broadcast restoration show tomorrow.

Alex Karanikolas, 26, owns his own architectural design consultancy, Into Architecture.

He will be featured on Channel 4’s Restoration Man fixing up an old church into a three bedroom house.

The show’s producers were interested in covering the build, after Alex’s wife, Louise, got in contact with her old UCLan lecturer who had featured on the show’s previous series.

The church they restored belongs to Louise’s brother Phil Evans and his partner Joanne McGirr, who also come from Adlington.

They were moving to a grade two listed building in Penrith, Cumbria which provided many problems which the couple had to overcome.

Alex said: “There were risks of unknown features because of the age and sensitivity with the approach to a grade 2 listed building.”

Problems on the site included a structurally unsafe spire which was replaced and a restricted budget.

The transformation of the church took 14 months to complete, starting from September 2010, and the couple were on site for the majority of the build.

The owners were delighted with the end result of the ecclesiastical conversion.

Alex labelled the whole experience as “a bit surreal” as he had watched the programme in the past and was shocked he would now be on with show presenter George Clark.

The programme airs on Thursday, January 19 at 9pm on Channel 4.
