A FLEDGLING online television channel for Rossendale has been given a cash injection by an adult learning initiative.

Video training is set to be given to dozens of would-be programme makers as part of the rossendaletv.co.uk project.

Waterfoot-based CAR Video Unit, which has secured support from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), is behind the web broadcasts.

And the first directors will be trained, at The Horse and Bamboo Theatre, once six volunteers have been signed up.

Paul Lydiate, the unit’s manager, said: “Long term, it offers a fantastic opportunity and really exciting digital future for Rossendale.

“I’ve been buzzing with new ideas for a week-and-a-half now, and am confident that Rossendale can really make supra-local TV work."

SFA bosses hope their backing, part of the Adult and Community Learning Fund, will kickstart work which will end up being a model for other similar media ventures.

The unit has previously benefitted from financial help from the borough council’s community fund and used to be based at the former Mary Hindle centre in Haslingden.

Eight-week training courses will be offered for film-makers, who must be aged 19 or over, and a video club will be established so graduates can share their skills and experiences.

People who want to enrol, with four different days on offer, are being asked to e-mail the scheme at liz@rossendaletv.co.uk. Previously the unit has also encouraged budding film-makers, hosting workshops and script-writing seminars.
