Diana Vickers: 'It was my time to leave X Factor'

DIANA Vickers made an emotional exit from the X Factor on Saturday night - but told the Lancashire Telegraph: “It was my time to go.”

The 17-year-old, who grew up in Pleasington, Blackburn, was voted out in the ITV1 show’s semi-final in emotional scenes.

She was mobbed by crying fellow contestants, led by close friend 16-year-old Eoghan Quigg, during her final performance.

The former Westholme School pupil said: “It was beautiful.

"I couldn’t think of a better ending and I will remember that moment for the rest of my life.

“I was happy to go - it was my time, and I was ready for it. I have had the time of my life.

“I’m amazed at how much everyone has supported me. Without all of them I would not have got this far.”

Yesterday afternoon the starlet, who now lives in Accrington with mum Ann, was having dinner with show mentor Cheryl Cole to discuss her budding music career.

And she has a number of meetings lined up in the next few days, before embarking on the X-Factor tour.

She said: “It’s a whirlwind. I have lived and breathed the X Factor for months and it feels weird not knowing what’s going to happen, but that experience will be with me forever.”

She said she had not yet been in contact with Take That’s Gary Barlow, who offered her a contract on the show, adding: “We’ll just have to see what happens.

“It’s all a bit strange at the moment - it’s obviously been a shock and I’ve had a bit of a cry this morning but I’m okay and I know I still have it in my power to get to the top.”

Diana sang Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” on the show, along with Dido’s “White Flag”.

Judges were impressed, despite criticism from Simon Cowell of her choosing the Dido song.

Cheryl Cole told presenter Dermot O’Leary on the show: “I don’t think this is the last we have seen of Diana.

"I’m really proud of her and I have loved every minute of working with her.”

Diana’s mum Ann said: “I thought she sounded brilliant, but obviously someone has to go every week and there can only be one winner in the end.

"She has had a fantastic time and made some wonderful friends.

“We’re all very disappointed that she won’t be able to do the homecoming concert in Blackburn.

"She would have loved to be able to sing in her home town and it would have been fantastic.”

Alexandra Burke, Eoghan Quigg and boyband JLS remain in the competition.

There is no reason for Diana not to have a show in Blackburn as long as she can get the funding.
I would want a refund though if it came out of my council tax.
Our roads and streets have been hellish to live with where people have suffered with broken limbs and that is where the Xtra money if found should be used.

Mariah, that's called censorship. I am as entitled to say I don't like her voice as you are to say that you do. Please don't tell people not to say anything just because their opinion differs from yours.

well done diane on doing what you have done and putting blackburn and accrington firmly on the map, i thought you were great on saturday and im sure you will go on to great things in the future best of luck, and never mind the knockers you will always have people like that while you are doing well for yourself.

George I don't think Accrington was ever mentioned on the programme - and please don't compare us or connect us with Blackburn in any way.

Are you sure you meant 'never mind the knockers...' That could be horribly misread!

i never said Not to say anything just a bit of advice weather u take it in a bad way thats up to you!

DavidBurnley, Burnley says...

Mariah - it could have somthing to do with the way you write. If you use an imperative 'if you have nothing nice to say DON'T say anything', then it's likely that readers with read it as an order - that's noting to do with how others perceive it, it is simply the mechanics of the language. If you don't want to be misunderstood, could I respectfully suggest that you use English properly to get your points across?

David - Mariah makes a fair point - stop being a prat & clear off to the Burnley Express website. This is a Blackburn produced newspaper

DavidBurnley, Burnley says...

No it isn't Fred. There are Hyndburn, Burnley and Rossendale versions of the LET and they carry different local news relevant to the area concerned. It's not even printed in Blackburn.

Mariah might well make a fair point - I was simply pointing out that unless English is used properly, then it becomes diffcult to actually see what the point being made is - but then should I expect more from within the boundaries of BwD?

Head Office in Blackburn as is the vast majority of it's circulation and we don't like to suffer pedantics either!

The only reason I'm glad Diana is out of the competition is so I won't have to read quite so much **** from the achievers around these parts.

Mariah - it's WHETHER and not WEATHER (as in sun, rain, cloud etc.). DavidBurnley has a fair point: if you don't express yourself clearly then nobody will appreciate the meaning behind your opinion.

And inter-town rivalry is next to pedantic in the dictionary. Who cares???

Picking up on comments in this thread and some of the others published since Saturday night -
To say that Diana "cannot sing" is just ridiculous; the X Factor is a money making venture and the final 12 were all selected for their potential ability to make money.

The show have to be sure that whoever wins will be a marketable commodity because they cannot predict which way the Great British public will vote.

Let's face it, over 7 million adults in this country are illiterate, and strangely enough, so are many of the Anti-Diana campaign.

Much as I like to avoid stereotyping I think it is more than a coincidence that so many of the nasty comments about Diana on this and other sites are mud-slinging rants, rather than articulate expressions of opinion.
If she doesn't appeal to these people then that is to her credit.

Finally - Blondie, you probably don't realise but "public" schools are not the opposite of "private" schools like Westholme - think Eton, Harrow etc.. they are "public" schools.

Good luck to Diana in choosing who to sign with for her forthcoming prosperous career.

Listening to Diana she needs elocution lessons and she certainly does not speak the Queen's English!

Totally you can't argue with that fact because her Lancashire accent is truly dreadful.

Her diction is awful and that is putting it politely and her singing?...I am not going there again.

There are better speaking children of Diana's age that come out of the local schools which i meant when i said public.

I don't know who first critised her accent but she sounds as common as muck!

Public soools do not and never will produce a Diana!!

Thank god!

I've never commented on Diana's accent because I think local accents and dialects are just as important as standard English. In fact it 'oins' me no end when people slate dialect or accent speakers for being lazy or illiterate.

Although, I'm not sure what accent Diana actaullt has because it certainly isn't a Lancashire one.

The difference is when 'ppl' use the written language in such a way that it become difficult to understand what they ar trying to say - it leads to misunderstandings and confusion.

I'd rather people wrote in dialect than mangle standard english to the point where it becomes an unitelligible mess..... tha knows.

Para Handy, Blackburn says...

DavidBurnley..troubl
e is if someone writes in their own dialect there's only the locals who understand it and that's when it becomes an unitelligible mess!
Diana may need elocution just as Lulu did all those years ago and it hasn't done her any harm!

DavidBurnley, Burnley says...
11:46am Thu 11 Dec 08

Using a dialect is no different than speaking another language - would you care to tell speakers of all langauges other than standard English that they are using an "unitelligible mess"?

Isn't that sort of attitude exactly what makes us so bad at foreign languages in thus country?

Para Handy, Blackburn says...

DavidBurnley...you are being pedantic!

and your point about that is............
