A VARIED programme of shows is being lined up at Mellor Brook Community Centre over the coming months, featuring some up-and-coming names from the folk world.

On Saturday, February 11 harpist Ailie Robertson returns to the venue with her band The Outside Track, which brings together musicians from Scotland, Ireland and Canada.

The band have taken traditional tunes and given them their own interpretation as well as composing a number of original songs.

Support will come from Tom Doughty, whose unique lap slide guitar style incorporates blues, jazz and folk.

Then in March, the centre will host the fifth Mellor Brook fiddle day, which will see two leading fiddle players Sophie Ball of 422 and Hinney Pawsey, from Jez Lowe’s Bad Pennies, taking a series of workshops based on playing for dance.

The event, on Saturday, March 10 will culminate with an evening ceilidh featuring the Union Street Band with caller Liz Calderbank.

April sees the welcome return of Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller, former winners of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, with support from Martin Ellison.

The centre will be transformed into a little French enclave on Saturday, May 12 with an appearance by Oh! La! La!, featuring accordionist Fifi la Mer, who will serve up an evening of jazz, pop and Piaf.

For the night, the bar will be serving a number of specially selected French tipples.

Also in May, on Sunday 27, The Tannahill Weavers will be the main attraction with support from Richard Moss.
