5:00pm Wednesday 2nd November 2011 in Stage: What's on
By Simone Yates
HISTORY doesn’t have to be boring and the Horrible Histories road show certainly kept us awake with its latest topic on stage – Awful Egyptians.
Based on the popular CBBC programme the educational gore was at its best packed with guts and blood and bodies galore.
The cast of Awful Egyptians performed jaw-dropping adaptation of mummifying a corpse (plastic of course) whilst educating the audience at the same time, explaining why the process was carried out thousands of years ago.
The 3D effects were great as we entered through the Gates of the Afterlife, with lots of audience interaction.
Even the adults were joining in with the songs throughout the show.
We followed characters and kings and solved hieroglyphics whilst watching the pyramids being built.
Scenes were sometimes a bit long but that didn’t matter with the majority of the audience being 6 – 12-year-olds – they were fascinated.
Once the show was over and the Evil Eye of Horus had closed it was refreshing to see an educational performance create so much fun!
*Horrible Histories – Awful Egyptians, Manchester Opera House, until Saturday, November 5.
