WILLY Russell’s two-handed Educating Rita is running at Colne Little Theatre this week.

The comedy, originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, is directed by Marilyn Crowther, and features Lisa Smith and Alan Hargreaves as the lecturer and his pupil.

The story follows Liverpudlian hairdresser Rita as she signs up for an Open University course in English literature, and her relationship with middle-aged lecturer Dr Frank Bryant.

A Colne Dramatic Society spokesman said: “Rita, dissatisfied with the routine of her work and social life, seeks inner growth by signing up for an Open University course.

“Frank is impressed by Rita’s verve and earnestness and is forced to re-examine his attitudes and position in life. Rita finds Frank’s tutelage opens doors to a new found self-confidence.

“The play deals with the concept of freedom, change, England’s class system, the shortcomings of institutional education, and the nature of self-development and of personal relationships.

“Get your tickets in plenty of time as this is sure to be a popular production.”
