Coldplay are to headline BBC Radio 1's major Big Weekend event in Glasgow next month.

The band join acts such as Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini during the weekend-long festival to be attended by up to 50,000 revellers.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - whose band appear on May 24 - said: "We're very thrilled to be asked, thank you so much."

The event is part of the BBC's contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Station controller Ben Cooper said: "Radio 1's ambition was to bring the biggest acts in the world to Glasgow for Big Weekend - and it doesn't get much bigger than Coldplay."

Tickets for the event at Glasgow Green on May 24 and 25 were given away earlier this month.

Celebrations will begin on May 23 with a further broadcast from the city's George Square featuring DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard.

Coldplay release their sixth album Ghost Stories the same week.
