Pierce Brosnan has confessed he was "never good enough" as James Bond.

The Irish actor played the secret agent in four films from 1995 to 2002 - GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day - but admitted to the Telegraph that he doesn't think his turn as 007 was up to scratch and that he can't even bring himself to watch his films.

"I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger (Moore) and Sean (Connery)," he said.

"It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn't have a follow-through of reality, it was surface.

"But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well."

Asked if he ever watches his outings as the suave spy, Pierce said: "I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. 'Cause it's just never good enough."

"It's a horrible feeling," he added.

However, the 60-year-old admitted that being 007, who is now played by Daniel Craig, had a good impact on his career.

"It's the gift that keeps on giving, that allowed me to create my own production company and make my own movies," he explained.
