Melissa McCarthy's movie Identity Thief has returned to the top of the US box office in its third week of release.

The comedy - which also stars Jason Bateman - earned 14.1 million dollars over Oscar weekend, enough to regain the top spot after losing it last week to Bruce Willis' A Good Day To Die Hard.

The movie has now made a total of 93.7 million.

Elsewhere, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's action film, Snitch, opened with 13 million dollars to take the second slot at the American box office. It was followed by Escape From Planet Earth and Julianne Hough's romantic film, Safe Haven.

Though A God Day To Die Hard, the fourth film in the action franchise, led the box office last week, it slid 60 per cent in its second week to 10 million dollars.

The other new wide release was the Weinstein Co's Dark Skies, a horror film starring Keri Russell. It debuted with 8.9 million dollars.
