Silver Linings Playbook director David O Russell has described the "elating" experience of being a multi-Oscar nominee.

Russell, who's up for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, while Silver Linings is in contention for Best Picture, used sporting terminology to try and explain his emotions ahead of the ceremony.

Speaking at the Independent Spirit Awards, where his movie won four gongs, he said: "How could you not be happy going into the World Series?

"Just pay attention and keep pinching yourself."

David was also nominated two years ago for the Fighter, which lost the Best Picture Oscar to The King's Speech - but he admitted he was 'humbled' to be in the running once again.

"It feels very elating, because you're part of this great energy that's been building up from all the film-makers and all the audiences and it's all building up like this tidal wave which is it's a lot of great energy," he explained.

"And then there's this great feeling of humbleness."

"You're with all these great film-makers and great actors and it just feels extraordinary to be a part of it."
