    Mad Men, BBC2

IF I may be presumptious, could I perhaps recommend a show for the discerning viewer which may have escaped your attention?

Mad Men on BBC2 last night (it's also shown on BBC4) looks as though it's well on the way to becoming the latest American TV import to leave us wondering why we can't do drama like this.

It's got a head start I suppose as it's written by one of the team behind The Sopranos, arguably the greatest series of them all.

But a show cannot live on reputations alone.

Set in Sixties New York, it's the tale of the advertising execs who shaped the American dream.

These guys are all sharp suits, give even sharper one-liners and have the morals of an alley-cat.

At the heart of it all is Don, our handsome anti-hero who's the brightest star in the ad world who knows he's only as good as his last slogan.

There are some comparisons with The Sopranos as this is developing into a fine ensemble piece and Don could be a Tony-like figure (without the violence).

But the beauty of Mad Men is in the detail. Even the colour schemes and the lighting make you feel as though it's the Sixties.

The sexism is stagger-ing and the smoking is almost choking, but you firmly believe that this is what life was like.

I think we've got a winner on our hands with this one.
