I HAVE given it until four episodes in to get into it, but I don't think I'll be watching again.
See the situation is it's virtually impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice, and sadly, this is one of the major issues I have with Ashes.
Basically I loved Life On Mars and got genuinely excited every week.

I had high hopes for this spin-off show. Sadly, I am left a little disappointed at the return of Gene Hunt and co. I tried to view Ashes on its own merits, but I just couldn't help to use Mars as the measuring stick, and that's a little unfortunate.
For those who are familiar with the Mars universe, it was no-doubt nice to re-visit but it just made me miss Sam Tyler more.
And Ashes to Ashes lacks the intimacy that made Life On Mars so compelling.
There is no magical sense of wonder and intrigue that was the very essence of Sam's journey.
And I don't like the new main character, Alex Drake she's a sort of know-it-all female Doctor.
The upshot is John Simm is an outstanding actor, and made us all feel instantly connected with Sam.
Unfortunately, actress Keeley Hawes who plays Drake just doesn't quiet have the same connection with the audience.
I believe that Hawes improved tremendously in the last two episodes, though the first two would have seen a loss of viewers. Still, an audience of between five and six million viewers is still healthy and I think viewers might be rewarded if they stuck with the show. Good elements are emerging in the storyline, even if in some respects this is the third series of [italic]Life on Mars[/italic] and Alex Drake is merely a regeneration of Sam Tyler (plus sex change).

Nooooo - this programme is great. I loved Sam Tyler til it hurt but Alex Drake puts a different perspective on the similar theme. She knows she is in a coma - the fun is finding out what she has to do to get back out of it. I think the "Mars" characters are developing more and more and Gene just gets better and better "a man of his reputation" is certainly living up to expectations. Try and view it differently and give it another try. Its the best thing on TV along with Shameless.

Have to agree. It's a very pale shadow of the glory that was Mars, and with the terrible miscasting of emotionally cold Keeley Hawes in the role of surely the most irritating and unlikeable female character we've been subject to for years, each episode just compounds the disaster. The lead character is the viewer's way into the story, there should be some interest or sympathy in them, but Alex Drake is simply repulsive, badly written and badly directed, a sure-fire way to get the viewer groping for the off-switch in horror.
