    Ashes To Ashes, BBC1

RIGHT then, there's no point putting it off any longer. I know we're only three episodes in and I know that I was full of praise when it started but really, Ashes To Ashes just isn't Life on Mars is it?

Don't get me wrong, Gene Hunt is still one of the finest characters to appear on TV for many a long day.

But it's everything else that I'm beginning to have a problem with.

Whereas Life of Mars had subtlety and some delightful touches, Ashes to Ashes appears far more heavy handed.

Take last night's episode with drugs hidden inside garden gnomes. The basic plotline was just silly.

And then there's Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake. I really hope that the directors insisted that she behaves like some demented aristocrat trying to do an impression of Davina McCall on Big Brother.

Alex dear, would you please stop shouting. Rather like the scripts themselves, a little subtlety would do wonders.

Perhaps we all got over-excited about Ashes to Ashes.

After all programmes like Life on Mars are so rare, we shouldn't have expected a spin-off series to reach such exalted heights.

And in comparison with some of the other efforts being served for our delectation, it's still perfectly watchable. Just don't try to compare it to its predecessor or you will be in for a disappointment.

I agree, John. I find myself digging out my Life on Mars DVDs more now than I ever did. I like Ashes to Ashes—it’s the best thing on telly today—but it does fall short in many areas. I hope that we get a little bit of the mystery back as well as the subtlety.

I have to admit that I'm only watching for Gene Hunt right now! Why do BBC shows only go for one or two seasons? They get me hooked and then pull the rug out from under me! I guess I'm just spoiled by my US 22 episodes per season and many more seasons to boot. Of course, I do develop a totally unhealthy dependency on the characters. HA! *light bulb* Ah, so you're watching out for the mental health of your citizens? Niiice! hee.
