JUST when you thought Saturday night would offer little in viewing terms now that Robin Hood has finished, up pops Graham Norton to save the day.
The One and Only aims to find the ultimate tribute act with the winner winning a contract to perform in Las Vegas.
For the performers this was serious stuff. For the viewers it was a hoot!
We had a German Kylie, a ginger-haired, white Lionel Richie, a scary Cher and Cliff RIchard who looked like a cross between Paul McCartney and Tony Blair.
If anyone doubts TV no longer does entertainment, then this should change your mind.
Of course it was cheesy, it's about tribute acts for goodness sake, but every credit to the Beeb for not subjecting us to six programmes X-Factor style of the completely hopeless. A brief snippet of the failures was far more effective.
The idea was that three of the best Rods, Kylies, Eltons etc were judged by their own super fans - a scary bunch in themselves - with the winners going through to a series of live shows over the coming weeks where we get the chance to vote (there's a surprise!).
For some of the acts the fans looked as though they wished they didn't have to put any of them through and for all the work he did Graham Norton could have been replaced by a lookalike.
But it was still one of the more entertaining bits of TV for some time.
So come on ginger Lionel, you can do it!

As an insider within the world of lookalike celebrity doubles and tribute acts, I must say that most of my fears that \"The One and Only\" would be another cruel freak show have been aleviated by the first show and it\'s gratifying to see the contestants treated with some dignity and respect. Of course, the UK\'s real top tribute acts are all too busy making a living to commit 12 weeks to this show and the \"prize\" of a contract with the Las Vegas Legends show (or any of the other four USA Legends spectaculars) is not too tempting to a pro as it\'s available to any talented act by simply auditioning. (The recent similar format series in the USA offered $100,000 first prize and obviously attracted many more top professionals) Still, it\'s nice to see this type of show on prime time and I hope that my colleagues and friends among the UK\'s \"real dead ringers\" may also get a prime time vehicle some time?
