THE LAKE DISTRICT by Arthur Mee, £9.99 ISBN 978-1-445642796

THIS ‘retro’ edition of Arthur Mee’s classic topographical guide to the Lake District has been produced 77 years after the original version was published as part of The King’s England series.

Mee, a noted journalist and educator, explores the stunning scenery and heritage of Westmorland and Cumberland (he covers the rest of the Lake District in his book on Lancashire).

Mee describes some of the Lake District’s most interesting towns, houses and churches along with their history and folklore and includes some of the inspirational poetry of Wiliam Wordsworth.

To compile the information for The King’s Guides, Mee and his researchers are said to have travelled ‘half a million miles’ around Britain, taking hundreds of photographs.

Seventy of them are reproduced in this new version of Lake District edition.
