AS THE spring migration gets into full swing, there are few more interesting places to visit than Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust near Southport. The reserve is well signed from the M6 and the A59.

There is a shop, a cafe plus plenty of comfortable hides.

This is the place to find experienced birdwatchers in search of rarities, but young naturalists as well as older folk learning the joys of ornithology are very welcome.

Over the next few weeks, winter visitors will be preparing to migrate to their nothern breeding grounds whilst summer visitors will be arriving from the far off places such as South Africa.

The 360-acre site provides plenty of space for large numbers of birds and these attract fascinating birds of prey. Those learning the craft of birdwatching should not think that birds of prey are cruel - they simply want to eat! Unlike the human species the birds do not kill for the fun of it.

All birdwatchers are hungry to learn more and they will never be disappointed by Martin Mere.
