THIS is the time of the year when watching and listening to birds can be a real treat.
Male birds sing and often develop delightful plumage in order to attract a mate.
One of the most spectacular displays is that of the male peacock who is often looked at with interest by the peahen.
This is the time however, when the study of birds is ideal for those who just want to stand still and be entertained.
Male robins and blackbirds can be particularly aggressive and wildfowl especially swans and also grebes, not only look good but indulge in spectacular courting rituals.
Although the peacock is not native to Britain, it is worthwhile visiting zoos or other areas which have peacocks in residence.
The peahen will select as her mate the male with the most spectacular display.
This ensures that the dominant male fertilises the eggs and strengthens the survival chances of the species.
