Child of Courage winner Bailey Matthews took to the stage and immediately declared that he’d had a late night and his mum had been “out drinking” prompting huge laughs from the assembled celebs. Bailey who has cerebral palsy won his award for his determination to complete a triathlon with his dad, pushing his walking frame to the end.

2. When Bailey was joined on stage by Olympians

After chatting with Tom Daley the award winner shouted his catchphrase “Be more Bailey” which soon started trending on Twitter.

3. When everyone learned of van driver Dee Patel’s heroics

He managed to stop a crash on the M25 by deliberately crashing into a runaway car which was careering across the road. When police arrived they expected to find carnage but no-one was hurt, not even the female driver of the car who had passed out because of a medical condition. And that was thanks to Dee’s quick thinking.

4. When we met the parents of the youngest ever organ donor

Jess Evans and Mike Houlston showed massive courage to agree to donate the organs of their newborn son. Teddy became the youngest ever donor in the UK and the family’s stories reduced us viewers to tears not least when they shared how the sound of Teddy’s heartbeat, recorded when Jess was pregnant, has been stitched inside an actual Teddy bear.

5. When we heard Amelia’s story

Young Amelia had the nation reaching for the tissues as she explained how she set about fundraising after her brother was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain condition. Months later her father was diagnosed with a tumour and has since past away.

Having already raised £25,000, she’s now secured a further £10,000 from sponsor Lidl and £5,000 from Simon Cowell who presented her with her award along with his X Factor colleagues.

Amelia’s little bro Josh almost stole the show when he turned down a kiss from Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, ducking out of her reach and shouting “no!”.

6. When the Alton Towers crash victims went up on stage

Three of those seriously injured in the Alton Towers crash were on stage to thank the emergency crews who came to their rescue. Our hearts turned to mush as survivor Joe Pugh struggled to put into words how much their life-saving work meant to him and those affected. He was joined on stage by Vicky Balch and Leah Washington.

7. Local hero Alice Burke made us giggle – twice!

Oh Alice! This crime-fighting great grandmother was on form as she picked up the Good Morning Britain Local Hero award for helping to make her east London estate safer.

Susanna Reid revealed that Alice was quite excited to meet fellow GMB host Ben Shephard with the award winner calling Ben a “sexy beast”.

Then on came Boris Johnson and Barbara Windsor to present the award. As BoJo suggested he would love to take credit for the drop of crime in her neighbourhood. Alice shut him down: “Oh no you can’t”, before the London mayor agreed.

8. The inspiring couple who set up a campaign after their daughter’s death

Parents Joanne and Dan Thompson set up Millie’s Trust named after their own daughter, following her death while at nursery from choking. They want a change in law for nursery staff to have better paediatric first aid knowledge while they are training parents and nursery staff with the skills.
