It’s been seven weeks of pots boiling over, too many cooks in the kitchen and drama galore.

Simon Wood, Emma Spitzer and Tony Rodd will be cooking their hearts out in the hopes of winning the show (BBC)

Yes, we’re talking about the upcoming Masterchef final.

1. The Avocado Cheesecake

Olivia from Glasgow was keen to make a good impression during episode one with a daring and unusual recipe.

The plan backfired when she announced she would be making avocado cheesecake and judge John Torode seemed less than impressed when he asked her “Why would you take that risk?” to which she simply replied “I love avocado.”

The 2009 Masterchef champion Mat Follas sampled it but judged it to be “horrible.”

2. The Empty Plate

Another memorable moment from the season premiere was poor Olivia having to hand over a virtually empty plate after she miscalculated her cooking timings.

She attempted to deep fry meatballs in breadcrumbs but when the time ran out she had to announce: “I don’t have food on my plate” but added “I hope I’ve got more to offer in the next round.”

Luckily she escaped elimination as her tiny portions of pea puree saved the day.

3. The Green Food Colouring

Despite his obvious nerves, Simon Wood managed to impress John Torode with his bright green food colouring.

John tried a small sample that was intended to colour Simon’s desert but ended up turning John’s whole mouth green.

The judge seemed quite pleased about the transformation saying “I feel like I’ve just eaten Kermit” before showing off his bright green tongue.

4. The Dreaded Fryer

James was the first contestant to leave after losing a hard-fought battle with the deep fat fryer. He tried valiantly to make show-stopping prawns but struggled when the batter of his tempura got stuck in the cooker.

John Torode was less than sympathetic and told him to “show some guts” and “chuck some seeds in.”

Poor James’ meal was considered worse than Olivia’s empty plate as he lost out to her during elimination.

5. Back to Basics

This year’s ultimate challenge took place in Sweden where the contestants were put through their paces as they attempted to use cookery techniques reminiscent of the Stone Age.

With no electricity or gas the final four had to whip up some culinary magic over an open fire.

Needless to say chaos ensued and jokes about the Swedish chef from The Muppets were out in full force.

6. The New Stuff

For loyal fans that have stuck with the show, it was time for a new element to add a little more jeopardy and excitement.

Upon tasting each dish, John and Greg would choose their favourite without telling each other.

Once the winning meals were revealed, that chef gets a free pass to the second round. It was juicy stuff as we all eagerly awaited their decision each week.

7. The RAF Cooking Challenge

When the contestants were faced with the challenge of cooking for the red arrows, everyone went all out to celebrate the RAF Display Team’s 50th Anniversary.

The red team opted for lamb shoulder with stuffing and lentils but the blue team were victorious with their salmon fillets served with clams and ravioli that went on to win the challenge.

8. The Surprise Guest

The looks on their faces when Monica Galetti showed up ranged from horror to sheer terror.

Known for her stinging one liners including “My granny could do a better job than that” and “If that fish was in my kitchen you’d be wearing it,” in previous episodes, Monica is not known for sugar coating her feelings.

The former sous-chef at the Michelin star restaurant Le Gavroche and Master Chef heavyweight came in to up the ante, judge the contestants’ dishes and generally bring terror to the kitchen.

9. Bring it Back!

One of the things we actually missed was the ingredient identifying challenge!

From sniffing vegetables to eyeing up herbs and desperately trying to guess between different cuts of raw meat, it always added some comic relief or at the very least made the contestants look ridiculous.

Although it’s good to change things up and keep it interesting, we miss this old classic so hopefully they’ll bring it back next season.

10. Tony’s Moustache

We saved the best for last: Tony’s glorious moustache that kept fans transfixed off all season.

And we don’t blame them! From the perfectly triangular goatee to the precision of the thin flicks at either side, it was simply glorious.

It was also an ingenious tactic as few cared about what he actually cooked because they were too mesmerised by his grooming talents- nicely played Tony.
