Idris Elba, Craig David and Suki Waterhouse are among UK celebrities who have recorded an interactive version of John Lennon’s hit Imagine as part of a global Unicef campaign.

The single has been launched to celebrate 25 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international agreement by governments to recognise the needs of children.

The Imagine project, which also features actor Hugh Jackman and singers Nicole Scherzinger and Katy Perry, is being supported by the late Beatles star’s widow Yoko Ono.

Members of the public are being encouraged to support the cause by recording their own version of the song online to create what the charity hopes will become the largest choir across the world.

These individual recordings, and those of Unicef’s ambassadors and other artists, will be made into a multi-lingual “world” version of Imagine along with a music video.

The final version will be released at the end of the year.

Unicef executive director Anthony Lake said: “The Convention on the Rights of the Child asked us all to imagine a better world for children – and calls on all of us to make that vision a reality. The #Imagine project gives people across the globe a chance to join a global movement for children, lending their ideas, their visions and, not least, their voices to advance the rights of every child, everywhere.”
