Emmerdale star Michael Parr has admitted he found himself completely starstruck by one guest at last year’s National Television Awards.

The actor who plays Ross Barton is up for Best Newcomer at this year’s ceremony, but said the guest list could struggle to top last year’s for him.

He said: “I’m really excited for the do alone, which is great. When you’re at the bar, everywhere you look there’s someone from TV so that’s pretty fascinating.

“The last time I was there, Mr Big (Chris Noth) from Sex And The City was there and I’ve watched all of Sex And The City because my mum made me watch them when I was a kid. She said, ‘This will help you with women when you’re older.’ So when I saw him I thought, ‘I’ve got to ask him for a photo,’ but I bottled it when I saw him.”

Michael, who goes up against Casualty’s Lee Mead, EastEnders’ Maddy Hill and Hollyoaks’ Cameron Moore for the prize, said that his family would love him to win.

He said: “I’m very competitive – the more I think about it, the more I want to win, so I try to put it to the back of my mind. I don’t think about it too much, but my mum’s like, ‘You must do more self-promotion.’

“But it would be really nice for my gran to be able to go down the shops and say, ‘My grandson, he’s the best newcomer in the soaps’.”

The National Television Awards take place on January 21. Voting is now open at www.nationaltvawards.com/vote.
