A DASH of 1940s classics, a sprinkling of boogie-woogie, some jump jazz and blues . . . the Swing Commanders are coming home for a festive jive at Clitheroe’s Grand Theatre next week, boasting a fresh line-up.

Singer Daisy Thirkettle has replaced classically-trained violinist Gaynor Sutcliffe, who played a key role in the Swing Commanders’ story for so long.

“There’s always a lot of upheaval in a band when someone leaves, especially if they’re as talented as Gaynor,” said band leader and founder member Peter Riley.

“But Daisy has wasted no time in winning the hearts of our fans.

“She moved up to Lancashire from Norfolk to join us, which shows a lot of commitment.

“Daisy has a nice stage charisma and she has brought something different to The Swing Commanders.”

The Swing Commanders really are the cats with the cream of Forties classics, and the Clitheroe ensemble have enjoyed another spectacular year, playing a variety of gigs and festivals on the local and international circuit.

“We’ve done some pretty big gigs and one of the highlights was sharing the bill with Ginger Baker, the legendary Cream drummer, at the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival at Colne,” added Peter.

“That was an incredibly special night for all of us at Colne.”

Riley, the band’s founding member, added: “It is fantastic to be invited to these musical events, and playing France’s biggest country music festival, held in Caponne Sur Azon, was another special gig for the band.

“It’s been so much fun and the beauty of 1940s swing is how easily it allows us to move from one musical type to another.

“There really is something for everyone in our sound.”

The Swing Commanders are currently working on their new album, due for release in 2014.

“We recorded our previous album at the Grand, and filmed two live shows there.

“I moved up from Hampshire to live in Clitheroe a few years ago and it is incredible to see how the Grand has developed into this amazing venue, which has become such a focal point of the town.

“It is always fantastic to go back there and play.”
