Review: The outlying fells of lakeland, by Alfred Wainwrght and Frances LIncoln
THIS is a revised edition of the last of Alfred Wainwright’s pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells, featuring the 56 ‘foothills’.
The updating was carried out by Chris Jesty, who helped Wainwright with the maps for two of his large-format books.
Shortly before he died, the legendary fellwalker told Mr Jesty that if ever the pictorial guides were to be revised, he should be given the job.
And a good job he has made of them, too.
Wainwright chose a series of ‘lesser fells’ for this guide specifically for those walkers who ‘because of age or infirmity’ could no longer tackle the higher ones.
