2009 is almost over, which means it's time to cast your vote in the Lancashire Telegraph website's end-of-year polls.

From now until the end of 2009, we're giving a well-deserved pat on the back to the people who've brought joy to East Lancashire in the sports and entertaiment fields.

Below is the shortlist of five East Lancashire celebrities, selected by Lancashire Telegraph features writers Jemma Humphreys and Caroline Taylor.

Once you've read the details about each nomination you can cast your vote at the bottom of the page.

Diana Vickers

ONSTAGE: Diana in Little Voice

The X-Factor semi-finalist from Huncoat has gone from strength to strength since being voted off the show last year.

After being snapped up by recording label RCA, she was given the lead role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at London's Vaudeville Theatre.

Diana has been critically acclaimed - even nominated for a best newcomer award - and looks set to carry on rising with the release of her debut album in 2010.

Jennie McAlpine

Jennie McAlpine

One of many East Lancashire 2009 has been the biggest year yet for Jennie, with her biggest storyline to date in Coronation Street.

Her character, factory worker Fiz, married former teacher John Stape in prison, after he was sent down for kidnapping Rosie Webster.

The 25-year-old Rossendale actress also continues to support charities both locally and nationally.

Jane Horrocks

FAMILY LINK: Jane Horrocks

Rawtenstall's Jane Horrocks was firmly back in the limelight in 2009 with the lead in the BBC TV production Gracie!, a drama portraying the life of Gracie Fields during World War II.

Meanwhile her distinctive Lancashire accent led to her narrating BBC2's television series The Speaker back in April, as well as being the voice of Fairy Mary in the film Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure.

Hollie Steel

PRE-ORDER SUCCESS: Where Are You Christmas? by Hollie Steel

11-year-old Huncoat girl Hollie looks set to conquer the charts as her debut single, co-written by Mariah Carey, has just gone on sale.

Earlier in the year the Britain's Got Talent finalist wowed TV audiences with her stunning vocal performances, reducing judge Amanda Holden to tears at her first audition.

Lee Mack

Lee Mack

Comedian Lee has become a household name after writing and starring in the sitcom Not Going Out, appearing as team captain on Would I Lie To You? and starring in Live At The Apollo.

The Blackburn Rovers supporter is also currently touring with his show 'Going Out', which runs until May 2010.

Do we really care who is celebrity of the year? Just because someone has sung a song on TV or appeared in Coronation Street doesn't raise the slightest interest. Much more important are the thousands of unsung men, women and children who work conscientiously day after day to do a good job, support their family, friends and work colleagues without ever wishing for fame or celebrity status. They get my vote!
