Lancashire Telegraph review by Vicky Cosgrove from March 13, 2010.

I haD heard so much about this restaurant from friends and family, so I had to try it out for myself —and boy, was I not disappointed.

As we entered on a Friday night it was packed, with almost every table full, but this did not take anything away from the service.

We were looked after very well.

For a starter I went for a seafood pancake and my other half went for the asparagus special.

The portions were quite large and the food was piping hot when it arrived.

The pancake was packed with different types of seafood and was accompanied by a thick, creamy sauce.

The asparagus came with smoked salmon and goat’s cheese and tasted fresh and delicious.

For main I opted to have penne Mangiamo and my partner had bistecca (steak) Mangiamo (not all the dishes on the menu are named after the restaurant).

My pasta contained chicken, a thick tomato sauce and a generous serving of feta cheese.

It was filling, homely and again the portion was quite large.

The steak was cooked to perfection and almost melted in the mouth.

We accompanied our meal with a bottle of house wine.

Too full for any more food, we did not manage to fit in a dessert, even though the options sounded tempting.

Instead, we went for coffee to finish off our meal.

At just over £40 for two, including wine, we were impressed.

I can’t help but add to the comments of my friends and family —Mangiamo's is definitely worth a visit.

IF you drive through Darwen on a Wednesday night, you may well find the pubs deserted and the streets empty... that’s because they’re all in Mangiamo.

The pizza restaurant was positively bursting when the three of us girls turned up for a midweek catch-up.

At first I didn’t realise what was going on — and then I spotted the sign: “half price pizza and pasta when purchasing a starter”.

That makes it entirely possible to have a delicious starter, main course and a drink, all for under a tenner.

You can't say fairer than that. All three of us took advantage of the deal - it felt foolish not to.

I had garlic bread with tomato to start (a huge pizza-style bread which I could only half finish) and for the main course, penne al salmone, a pasta dish with smoked salmon in a tomato and cream sauce, with a dash of chilli as requested.

My dining companions enjoyed their garlic mushrooms and starter portion of penne arrabiata, as well as their main dishes of Siciliana and Capricciosa pizzas.

The staff (who were Italian — always a good sign) were attentive and friendly. I'll definitely be going back . . . especially if it's a Wednesday.

I dined at Mangiamo's recently with a friend. The Arriabiata sauce tasted distictly sour; my friend's 'vinaigrette' dressing was very sweet - both very worrying. However, I note that this restaurant scores zero with the local environmental health inspectors, who have no confidence in their ability to run a safe, hygienic establishment. No stars out of five is very disconcerting indeed and I wonder whether they would receive such favourable reviews, had the reviewers been aware of such abysmally poor standards.

After dining at mangiamos last night i will not be returning again. The service was abysmal, the food was cold and not very good. I ordered a meat ball starter which when it arrived was cold enough to shock my teeth. When i called the waiter over he knew what i was going to say and took them away and warmed them up. Myself and a friend both ordered the same steaks. Mine medium rare and my friends well done both were well done and quite tough and lacking in taste. My wife ordered chicken enhilladas and the meat didnt even look like proper meat. The only way of describing it would be cheap processed chicken.
Very disappointing from a restaurant that charges top dollar.

We dined at Mangiamo's last night and sadly the recent decline has not been halted. We have reached line in the sane now; we won't be returning. There were quite a few minor issues; no draught lager, longish wait, incredibly noisy coffee bean grinder braling in our ears for 45 minutes, but the worst part for me was the hame on my pizza - it was PROCESSED TINNED ham !! When I asked why this should be so, the waiter looked at me as if I were insane. Nobody came to speak to us about it and we paid up and left. This used to be on a par with Alghero's but they're streets behind now.
