Situated on the A6, and just off the M61, the Hartwood's two for one menu gets its fair share of passing trade.

The popular pub and restaurant is one of the biggest in Chorley, and is often busy, particularly for evening meals and Sunday lunch.

And that is little surprise considering its excellent two-for-one menu, which offers superb value.

Despite its hectic location the Hartwood is an old-fashioned building with a traditional and welcoming interior.

The Hartwood offers an extensive menu, from a wide selection ranging from pub grub classics to lighter snacks and vegetarian options.

For our meals one Saturday lunchtime I chose the deep filled steak and ale pie, whilst my partner went for one of the lighter lunchtime meals, a cheese and bacon burger. Both meals were served with chips and a side salad.

Considering the two main meals cost a total of less than £8, the food that arrived was pleasantly surprising.

The steak and ale pie was one of the biggest I have seen, and the pastry was certainly deep-filled, while the "lighter" burger would have catered for most lunchtime appetites.

For pub food, the meals were particularly tasty, the steak in the pie was much more tender than in many other cheaper alternatives, and had a melt in the mouth feel that left me wanting more. The burger was cooked to perfection, with the cheese melted enticingly in between the bacon and burger.

The chunky chips that accompanied both meals were well-cooked, while the side salads were well stocked and fresh.

The Hartwood offers a fairly standard wine list for a pub, but has only a small variety of draught beers, ciders and ales.

For anyone looking for a filling, tasty meal, whether it be for lunch or in the evening, then the Hartwood certainly offer good value, especially for families.

How did it fare? (out if six stars): Food 5, drink 3, service 4, atmosphere 5, Value 6

I quite agree, any decent 'food writer' would not give a 2for1 pub 5 out of 6, its ridiculous. What quality of produce is it they are using where they can produce 2 main meals for under £8. No doubt everything comes in ready made and just pays a visit to the microwave. I think your reviewers need to be retrained about proper local produce and food that has actually been cooked by a chef!

i too am getting quite fed up of seeing places i have been to and had rubbish food given great marks and free advertising when everybody knows(having worked in a few)that all the food is frozen and zapped as an order comes in!please start reviewing decent local cafes/restaurants where care and skill is used to produce good food.

I can't believe some of the comments here. Me and my wife have been to this pub and had lunch on quite a few occassions. I don't know how the food is cooked but it was very very GOOD.

Obviously the food critics in question went and had the same experience as us. Maybe the other comments are made by people who go to more expensive restaraunts and
dare I say it are a tad snobbish about less establishments that cater for all appetites and wallets.

The Hartwood keep up the great work !
