WHEN it comes to having a successful DIY approach to making music few bands epitomise that better than The Lovely Eggs.

Husband and wife duo, David Blackwell and Holly Ross, have steadily been winning over new fans with their distinctive blend of psychedelic rock with live shows getting bigger and bigger and their more recent album This is Eggland delighting the critics.

“You know what? I think I’d prefer it if we weren’t as busy,” said Holly. “We are doing everything ourselves so it’s a bit of a crazy mad life we have. We’ve got a four-year-old boy and we’re always trying to juggle our lives around him and making records and going on tour.”

Holly and David have been making music together for 12 years and there is a real buzz about what they are doing.

“When we started the band wanted to do it totally differently to other bands,” said Holly. “We had no career ambitions whatsoever.

“The dream was to travel round the world, make music and meet new people. We didn’t think about about making an actual record for ages.

“Our fans share a common desire for a better life in a way, a more simple life and not wanting more all the time.”

The couple are proud that they have stayed put in their native Lancaster when so many bands head to London in pursuit of fame.

“It’s very important to us - we’re from Lancaster, that’s home,” said Holy. “The music industry is full of smoke and mirrors. People say you have to move to London to make it. But we just said why?”

The Lovely Eggs approach is a refreshing change from the mass produced, over-hyped. generic nonsense which so many bands are putting out.

“I think a lot of bands are just so desperate to be noticed,” said Holly. “We have no agenda; we’re just along for the ride.

“When brilliant things happen and we sell out gigs that’s new for us and we love it. There is such a great positive atmosphere at the gigs too.

“For us the main thing in the band is the adventure and doing new things. Where it is successful or not is pretty irrelevant.”

The Lovely Eggs play Manchester Ritz on Saturday, May 5 and at Preston Live on Thursday, May 24
